Nome Harness

Seleverkstedet's Nome harness is an ergonomic pulling harness with extra adjustability around the neck. By ergonomics, we mean that it is especially suitable for the work the dog will be doing - i.e. pulling. It has a rear cobble attachment with a replaceable and adjustable sliding end, which ensures that the harness is stable on the dog. Seleverkstedet Nome harness has the well-known balance and stability that Seleverkstedet has always been known for, and it is made of solid materials and with stitching that will last.

A pulling harness is a dog harness with a pulling attachment relatively far back on the back. Suitable for skijoring, cycling with the dog in front of the bike, mushing and running with a joringline and belt. The most important and unique feature of a pulling harness is to give the dog free airways and free movement when pulling weight.  The harness neck opening should allow free shoulder movement and not prevent the dog from moving its front leg forward. To adjust the neck opening, tighten the top strap on the harness neck.

What types of breeds does the Nome harness fit?

Nome harness is a pure pulling harness that fits the rectangular and slim dog. Rectangular breeds and types include include setters, German shepherds, huskies, and other types and breeds like these.

The five sizes (XS - S - M - L - XL) range from a 16 kg setter female to a 35 kg German Shepherd. If you have a dog that falls outside this category, our Trekreg adjustable pulling harness is the best option.

Putting a Nome harness on your dog

When the harness is on, pull the fur/loose skin around the neck well forward under the harness neck opening and stretch the harness while keeping the dog's head down in a horizontal line with its back. This is the dog's body position when pulling. The rear end of the harness without the rope loop should end approximately at the set of tail (where the tail exits the body).

How to find the right size:

See the size chart and choose the harness that your dog's measurements fall within.

  • NECK MEASUREMENT: Measure the circumference of the neck close to the shoulder blades where the neck opening will sit.
  • BACK MEASURE: Measure from midway between the shoulder blades - the point just above the front legs that feels like two noticeable edges and back to the tail root (where the tail sticks out of the body).
  • SKULL MEASUREMENT: A harness should fit well and may be a little tight to get over the dog's head. A tip is to turn the neck opening 90 degrees when putting it over the head.

The back loop on the harness is used to adjust the total length of the harness in relation to the dog's physical length and the connection point on the line set/wire. This is to ensure the correct load distribution and distance between the dogs in the group.

Spare parts for Nome harnesses

A Nome harness from Seleverkstedet is intended to last a long time even if the wear points are subjected to heavy wear - therefore, for environmental reasons, we have spare parts for Seleverkstedet's Nome harnesses. The loop and sliding end at the back of the harness must be replaced when worn and before it tears. New ones can be ordered from Seleverkstedet.

Maintenance/washing

All equipment lasts longer if it is kept clean, and it is also more pleasant for the dog. Avoid leaving it damp over time.
The harness can be machine washed at 40 degrees in a laundry bag. Let it dry at room temperature - DO NOT tumble dry, as this will deform the foam in the padding. Also check for loose threads and lightly sear them with a lighter.
